Red-Bellied Water Snakes : Nerodia erythrogaster

I have a really nice pair of these beautiful, calm water snakes from the Carolinas. They are easily tamed and make great pets. Mine eat scented rat pups but will take all sorts of fish and frogs too. These are NOT plastic tub snakes. They will develop ventral scale rot and die if they don’t have lots of ventilation and a warm overhead incandescent lamp. Regular aquariums with screen tops make perfect enclosures for these snakes.

I am raising a few holdbacks from last years clutch, some of which will be available in July. My female is gravid and will produce around 24 young this summer – June or July. The babies are easy feeders on bait minnows (no goldfish!) and scented pink mice. They are easy to transition to rodents.

Price is $55 each plus actual shipping. Export to Europe is possible.

They have to have a very warm overhead lamp or they will not eat! All water snakes are evolved to bask in the hot sun, so they have to have this simulated in captivity. I use a 75 watt incandescent (no LEDs) flood bulb in a 10 inch reflector from the farm store (designed for chicks). All water snakes have to have a DRY substrate. A wet substrate will lead to scale rot.
